What is Reiki?

Reiki is a gentle, hands-on healing technique that originated in Japan. The word Reiki means Universal Life Force Energy. This is the same energy that the Chinese call “chi”, the Yogis call “prana”, and some Russian researchers call “Bioplasmic energy.” The Usui System of Reiki is a simple and natural healing method and an effective way of transferring this energy.

What is healing?

Healing is an active process whose end result is one of wholeness. To heal means to bring the body into balance mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Healing helps the body to help itself, strengthening the relationship between the different aspects of ourselves, and helps us to let go of the past and open to the present. Healing practices contribute to lasting health and happiness. However, energetic healing may or may not provide a cure for an illness. Mind-body therapy and energetic healing are not a substitution for professional medical care but acts as a supplement to a doctor’s care.

How does Reiki work?

The Reiki practitioner is a channel for the universal Reiki energy. The flow of the energy is one way, from the source through the practitioner and into the recipient. The only transfer of energy is that of Reiki Universal Energy, not the limited energy of the practitioner. Reiki seeks out the areas that are in need of healing, flowing in just the right amount and extent for each individual.

The Reiki energy infuses the patient with life energy, helping to push toxins out of the body and calling the recipient’s own inner healer into action. The energy works to gently remove the blocks within the system and opens us to change both mentally and physically. Our individual willingness and receptiveness to the treatment determines how much progress is made in the direction of healing. The Reiki energy leaves the body strengthened and harmonized after a session.

In the case of those suffering from serious health conditions or major diseases, Reiki does not replace the need of conventional medical treatment. But those who receive regular Reiki sessions along with their medical treatment often find their healing time to be shorter and easier to handle.

What can you expect in a Reiki Session?

A Reiki session is generally a quiet and reflective time for the individual. The Reiki energy feels soothing, peaceful, relaxing, and warm. Some experience the energy as love, a universal feeling of acceptance and support. Sometimes a prickly or restless feeling may arise if there is some excitable energy needing to be released; generally the session is very pleasant with the client feeling safe and secure.

Becoming a Reiki Practitioner

The ability to heal is an ability we all have within us; we just need to develop it and learn how to use it. To develop your healing abilities through Reiki, one must go through the attunement process. The attunement opens the crown, heart, and palm chakras and connects one to the unlimited source of Reiki energy. After the attunement, subtle changes occur in the energetic and physical bodies that allow you to channel the Reiki energy.

The reasons for becoming attuned to Reiki are numerous and individual, for Reiki can be personalized for your needs. If you feel called to be a “Healer” assisting others in the healing process, Reiki is an easy and effective healing modality to learn. Nurses, Massage Therapists and Body workers will find Reiki an aid to their current line of work. Mothers enjoy the calm it brings to their mind as well as the zap of their “healing touch” for their children. If you are suffering from a serious illness or disease, becoming attuned will allow you to bring the energy into your body assisting and expediting your healing journey. Originally Reiki was designed as a Spiritual Path and can still be used as a way to connect to your Higher Self and the energy of the universe in a profound way.

Is Reiki a Religion?

While the Reiki energy is spiritual in nature, it is not associated with any religion nor does it require one to believe any particular dogma. Reiki practitioners are encouraged to make their own decision about their religious beliefs and practices. Reiki does encourage one to live in ways that are harmonious and supportive of others and includes some universal ethical ideas to promote peace and harmony.
